From 2011 to 2020, Grieg Foundation has invested NOK 16.5 Million in the project Literacy for Empowerment in Rwanda. The goal of the project is to provide literacy and numeracy training for adults, as well as promoting general empowerment of poor women in Rwanda. The project has exceeded its original targets and is regarded as a significant success by local and national authorities as well as local partners.

Since 2018, 10,520 people has sat for the 2nd quarterly evaluation with a passing rate of 97% (10,193). 

Three phases

During the first phase of the Literacy for Empowerment a total of 35,315 people were offered 180 hours of literacy training. In the second phase, the project increased the literacy and numeracy skills of 22,000 people. The extended second phase was finalized 31st May and delivered literacy and numeracy skills for 25,367 people. When the target of phase three is reached, a total of 90,682 people will have received literacy and numeracy training. 

To facilitate the teaching and learning process, materials have been purchased and distributed to both teachers and learners. The modules equipped learners with basic skills in reading, writing and calculus with focus on different topics on life skills: health, nutrition, agriculture, hygiene, savings, basic human rights. A total number of 10,581 learners (8,744 learners - 82% women) was enrolled, out of these 10,193 passed the 2nd quarterly evaluation.
