War and disasters have severe negative impact on children’ and adolescents’ mental health, wellbeing, and ability to learn. The Children and War Foundation (CAW) has developed psychosocial interventions and materials to help children after wars and disasters, and for children at high risk to be identified quickly after traumatic events. The most widely used intervention is Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT), which is a manual used by non-specialists to help children cope with trauma reactions. With support from Grieg Foundation, CAW is able to respond to requests for training and support in different places in the world. In the Middle East, training of teachers, social workers and others is now ongoing to help children in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine.

In one project that started in January, CAW collaborates with War Child Holland- Syria Country Office, to train and evaluate TRT in North Syria in a pilot TRT with War Child’s Syria local team. We provide online training of trainers to War Child’s psychosocial teams who will in their turn train their partner staff in Syria who will work with affected children in the local communities. The aim is that those trained in North Syria will be able to help approximately 7500 children between the ages of 8 to 18.
