About the project

RotaXion project for children in families with restricted finances and difficult social conditions

In the RotaXion project, we organize creative leisure excursions for pupils in years 8 to 10 at Rothaugen school to help to strengthen their personalities. This school has its own introductory class in year 8 where pupils with immigrant and/or refugee backgrounds learn Norwegian before being integrated into the ordinary classes. This class is prioritized, but students from all grades may participate in the chosen activities. Members of our Rotary club volunteer to take part in the initiative and the related events.

Recent living conditions surveys in the district have shown that various initiatives have had a positive impact on the local community. We believe that we make one of several valuable, positive contributions. This is supported by the feedback we receive from the school and, not least, from the children and young people who take part in the activities. They strengthen their self-confidence, mastery, and learning capabilities through meaningful experiences. This has great value on a social level.  We can join these young people and experience things together. Thus, we can contribute positive and healthy thoughts through shared experiences. RotaXion sees it as important that the school's coordinators consider and chose who can participate and who cannot. While choosing children from families with challenges, they also ensure that a friend, who may come from a resourceful family, is included.

Examples of recent events include: High and Low climbing park at Valle, Activity day at VilVite, Experience day at Dale Oen Experience, Sailing with Bergen Seilforening, Visit to Hurtigruten, Rafting at Voss, Visit to 4H farm, Visit to Bergen Media City, Overnight trip to Vestre (Bjorøy), Visit to the Naval Academy's navigation simulator, Wind tunnel at Voss Vind, and Prisoners at the Fort at Gyldenpris in Bergen.

About the organisation

Rotary International, founded in 1905 by Paul Harris in Chicago, represents a global humanitarian organization and network of more than 1.2 million voluntary people consisting of friends, leaders, and problem-solvers.

Rotary members, known as Rotarians, are dedicated to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges, including disease prevention, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, education, and economic development. Through various projects and initiatives, Rotary clubs aim to make a lasting impact in their local communities and beyond. One of Rotary's most notable efforts is the fight to eradicate polio, a mission that has seen significant progress thanks to the organization's commitment and collaboration with global partners. Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self," reflects its dedication to making a positive difference in the world.
