Did you know that doctors can boost your own immune system to attack cancer cells?

Cryoimmunotheraphy is a new and innovative method in the treatment of cancer that exploits and enhances the body´s own immune system to attack cancer tissue. Using the patient´s blood, dendritic immune cells are produced and made more potent before they are injected back in the cancer tumor. The new cells attack cancer tissue in the tumor and all over the body. The goal is to develop personal cancer vaccines.

Karl-Henning Kalland and his research team at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen are leading experts in the development of this method. They have promising results in a clinical trial with prostate cancer patients. Now they will expand and try the same method on patients with kidney and uterine cancer.

Cryoimmunotherapy is dependent on expensive production equipment. Grieg Foundation has supported Kalland and his team for several years. This year´s funding made it possible for them to purchase the CliniMACS Prodigy Instrument that will make it possible to produce the dendritic immune cells. This research can revolutionize cancer treatment, prolong many lives and may reduce the need for painful chemo therapy and radiation.

Grieg Foundation are proud to supporter innovative medical research.
