This is my chance to pursue my dreams

Who: SOS Malawi

What: Olive (22)

Thanks to the support Olive (22) received from Grieg Foundation and SOS Children’s Villages to continue her education, she is now able to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.

When Olive was 18 years old, her father suddenly passed away. Meeting the nurses who tried to save her father’s life inspired her to dedicate her own life to saving others.

- I fell in love with the way the nurses were doing their job. I decided that in the future, I would try my best to save other people’s lives.

A supportive grandmother

After her father’s passing, Olive moved in with her grandmother, Tereza, who works as a

farmer and provides and cares for Olive and her cousins.

– She’s not just my grandmother; she is my friend. She does everything she can to provide for us. I really adore and love her so much, Olive says to describe Tereza, her biggest supporter.

She was the one who encouraged Olive to reach out to SOS Children’s Villages Malawi, to support her educational needs since she was unable to cover the costs of nursing school. Through funding from Grieg Foundation, Olive had her school fees covered.

One step closer to achieving her dreams

Olive is currently in her final year of nursing school. What keeps her motivated is knowing that someone believes in her.

– Being a girl, you have many challenges. Here, in my village, so many girls get pregnant when they’re still young. They drop out of school, and their future is ruined.

She hopes that she will inspire other girls in her community to stay in school and follow their dreams to become financially independent.

– Because of the scholarship that I got; I feel like this is my chance to pursue my dreams
