Fridykkerer rydder 20 tonn marint avfall

Who: Martin Helseth

What:
Freedivers will clean 20 tonnes of marine waste during 2023

Where: Norway

Project period:
2023

Martin Helseth and a crew of freedivers will clean 20 tonnes of marine waste during 2023. Martin will host cleanups across the country, and the main part will be cleaned from the Oslo Fjord.

As often portrayed in the media, the state of the fjord is not good. This will be one of many efforts to help the condition of the fjord improve. Freediving involves putting on basic equipment and swimming down to the seabed on a breath of air. We will remove a wide variety of items not belonging under water. We will mostly focus on severely polluted areas close to the city center. In addition to the physical removal of trash from the sea, Martin will spend time raising public awareness about the problem of marine waste at schools, sporting events and through social media. The cleanups are open for everyone to join and will typically be hosted on sundays. Martin will spend weekdays cleaning as well.

Our ambition is to become the most important arena for climate communication in Norway and the Nordic. We will do this by inviting individuals with interesting and unique perspectives. Among our speakers are philosophers, politicians, authors, journalists, climate scientists, lawyers, leaders of NGOs and organizations, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders.

The program is balanced between optimism and realism, and will consist of everything from conversations, debates and lectures to film screenings, concerts, and other cultural events. In 2023, the festival will be held the 15th to the 17th of March.

The funds from Grieg Foundation will be spent on freediving gear for the freedivers, a salary for the cleanups and proper handling of the trash.
