Who: Gryteklart Griegkvartal

What:
Completion of the Architectural Design Competition

Where: Bergen

Project period:
2023-2024

Griegkvartalet, featuring a new Music Theatre, will be the cultural powerhouse of Bergen and Vestland, promoting the city as a modern and innovative cultural centre that is inclusive and accessible to all. Envisioned as a vibrant arts powerhouse, Griegkvartalet is set to become an inviting and accessible cultural centre unique in Scandinavia. Griegkvartalet will cater to a diverse audience of both locals and visitors, confirming the city’s position as a modern, innovative, and inclusive cultural hub.

The introduction of the Music Theatre completes a unique cluster in Edvard Grieg's Square, alongside Grieghallen and Peer Gynt Salen. Partially situated beneath the southern part of Edvard Grieg's Square, the Music Theatre replaces existing underground parking, marking the realization of architect Knud Munks' vision for the area. This addition ensures an outstanding acoustic space for symphonic music, opera, musicals, ballet and more, while offering an exceptional visitor experience tailored for all age groups and easily accessible to diverse audiences.

Promising outstanding architectural qualities, the building will be physically connected to Grieghallen, ensuring both seamless audience facilities and operational efficiency. Complemented by new underground exhibition and support spaces, Griegkvartalet will evolve into a unique constellation of arts venues. Moreover, it will serve as a platform for national and international conferences, fairs, and exhibitions, contributing to the regions broader cultural landscape.

Support from Grieg Foundation will help secure the effective completion of the international architecture competition and further planning upon which the final construction project will be approved.
