Inclusion and Equal Opportunities

Tertnes skoles musikkorps is a vital arena for unity and achievement, serving as a significant alternative for those who may not find themselves comfortable in sports. Similar to society at large, we observe a growing need for tailored programs for children with special needs. TSM aims to expand its educational offerings with increased instruction in smaller groups. This approach ensures a more individualized educational experience for children who require it, helping to prevent dropouts. Achieving this goal will enable us to provide more opportunities for the sense of community that the band offers. We strongly believe in the power of music to unite and include individuals from all backgrounds. In the school band, friendships are formed across age, social and economic boundaries. By facilitating a more inclusive musical education, we can contribute to preventing exclusion and offer everyone the chance to experience achievement and the joy of music.

Musical Quality for All

TSM has consistently ranked at the top of Norwegian school bands in the first division for many years. Many of our musicians maintain a high musical standard, and the need for tailored instruction for this segment of the band ensures that we have a high-quality ensemble, fostering enjoyment and development for both experienced and novice members. To sustain our high musical standards in the 1st Division Brass School Band, we must offer competitive salaries and resources to our dedicated instructors. We aim to provide our new aspirants with quality and suitable instruments to play. We have found that some of our old and worn-out instruments make it challenging to motivate new musicians. This year, both instructor salaries and instrument costs have increased, making it demanding to maintain and develop the band in line with our musical and social ambitions.

Funds from the Grieg Foundation will be used, among other things, for more tailored instruction in the band, catering to both beginners and our most skilled musicians. Additionally, we will focus on providing extra support for musicians with special needs. Closer monitoring of musicians will help retain the most talented individuals while including and retaining children who might otherwise struggle in a band with such a high musical standard and ambitions as TSM! We will also allocate funds for better training instruments to contribute to faster mastery experiences for aspirants. The Grieg Foundation funds will thus contribute to both inclusion and musical quality.
