Inclusion through education
Who: Krokeide Foundation (Videreskolene)
What: Inclusion through education - a project aimed at increasing the national capacity for specially adapted upper-secondary education by establishing new schools
Where: Bergen and Troms
Project period: 2024-2026
One of the most significant challenges related to social exclusion in Norway is the high rate of youths dropping out of upper-secondary education. This issue is particularly impactful for students with disabilities and/or learning impairments. Education plays a crucial role in fostering inclusivity in society and providing access to the Norwegian labour market. In essence, education serves as an effective deterrent against social exclusion.
Videreskolene operates two boarding schools in western and eastern Norway, offering specially adapted upper-secondary education. These schools provide a second chance for young people with physical, psychological, or learning impairments, a group that is at high risk of social exclusion. Through our unique school concept, which includes a high teacher density and 24/7 availability of social workers, we create a supportive yet expectant learning environment.
The current phase of the project involves establishing a new school in Troms, northern Norway, for up to 188 students. This initiative will significantly enhance the availability of specially adapted education and contribute to the inclusion of young people in the region into society and the labour market.
Upon completion of the project, new students will:
Experience a secure, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.
Interact with peers who share similar backgrounds and educational experiences.
Engage with teachers, advisors, social workers, and other dedicated school staff who are committed to supporting students through their education.
