Who: Frøya Basket

What:
The “School Homework Project” and the “Girls´ Project”.

Where: Bergen

Project period:
2024

Frøya Basket is located in Laksevåg, an area that ranked low in the public health overview in 2019. Frøya Basket has one team playing at the elite level, but is a club for everyone, with active members from 2 to 50+ years old. The club has 360 members from more than 39 nations, and nearly 60% have multicultural backgrounds or nationalities other than Norwegian. Frøya Basket is a relatively young club with ambitions to become a large, inclusive club. The club has large sports facilities. In line with the club’s values, we aim to contribute to our local community through our projects. More than 30 children participate in the “School Homework Project”. About 60 girls participate in the “Girls Project”. “Young Leadership”, where 17 youths aged 15 to 24 get leadership and coaching training is another project, and for the youngest children “Inklubasket” offers free training during after-school care.

“Jenteløftet; Utdanning gir valgmuligheter”

Our project consists of two intertwined parts: the “School Homework Project” and the “Girls Project”.

The “School Homework Project” caters to 30-35 children and teenagers two days per week. The children get nutritious meals before they do their homework. The main focus areas are oral and written Norwegian, mathematics, and English. There are 5-6 instructors in each session who work together with the children, either one-on-one or in small groups.

The “Girls´ Project”, initiated in the fall of 2021, has grown rapidly from zero to five teams. Sixty girls are involved in this project which aims to create a safe and welcoming environment. The program hosts events like "Girls' Nights" and promotes the girls' well-being through various activities like knitting, baking, and mother-and-daughter nights. The girls also participate in tournaments both in Oslo and in Kristiansand.

We strive to build a club where members join early, as in our “Nanobasket Project” (pre-school age), allowing us to foster relationships with participants and their guardians at an early stage. As the children enter the school system, our “Inklubasket Project” offers free after-school training. Thus, many children and guardians know the club quite well before they enter into the “Girls project” or the “School Homework Project”.

We are committed to assisting our members and their families over time. We are exploring further ways to help, like offering courses through our “Young Leadership Project” to increase job prospects. As a Neighborhood Club, our goal is to ensure that children and teenagers in our neighborhood have options when they finish school.
